JPG vs PNG vs WebP: Which Image Format Should You Use?

Images make up the bulk of the internet's visual weight. But not all images are created equal. Choosing the wrong format can result in blurry photos, missing transparency, or slow-loading websites that kill your SEO score.

Let's demystify the three kings of web imagery: JPG, PNG, and WebP.

1. JPG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)

Best for: Photographs and complex images with many colors.
Pros: Small file size, widely supported.
Cons: No transparency support, "lossy" compression (quality degrades with every save).

Use JPG when you need to upload a photo to social media or your blog and want to keep the file size low. If you have a different format, you can easily convert to JPG for better compatibility.

2. PNG (Portable Network Graphics)

Best for: Logos, icons, and graphics requiring transparency.
Pros: Supports transparent backgrounds, "lossless" compression (no quality loss).
Cons: File sizes can get very large, very quickly.

Never use PNG for standard photographs unless you need a transparent background; otherwise, you're just wasting bandwidth.

3. WebP (Web Picture Format)

Best for: Modern websites.
Pros: Superior compression (smaller than JPG and PNG) with high quality. Supports animation and transparency.
Cons: Older browsers (like Internet Explorer) don't support it.
